The mansion house was designed by the Adams architectural brothers from Edinburgh, in 1752-53. It is fascinating to try to suggest where the builders obtained the stone that was used both inside the house and for the façade in spite of the lack of documentary evidence, using local knowledge on historic quarries. Gunsgreen Connections Talk Two - John Nisbet, The making of a Smuggler - Join us for a fascinating talk about John Nisbet, the infamous smuggler, and learn all about '.... his intriguing life at Gunsgreen House' John Nisbet, the first owner of Gunsgreen House, was both a respectable merchant and a notorious smuggler. Historian Derek Janes tells the story of Nisbet’s life, the contraband goods he handled, and how he and his associates managed to evade the exciseman.
